Credit Card Reward Points Calculator for Indian Banks
Updated 28 February 2026
TL;DR: Most Indian bank reward points are worth ₹0.25–₹1 per point, but the gap between the best and worst redemption options can be 4x. Calculate your card’s effective reward rate before assuming you’re getting a good deal.
Why Your Reward Rate Is Probably Smaller Than You Think
Every bank advertises earn rates. HDFC says “5X points.” SBI says “10 reward points per ₹100.” These numbers mean nothing without knowing what one point is actually worth in rupees — and that number is buried deep in the T&Cs.
This guide breaks down the math across the major Indian bank cards, and gives you the formula to calculate your own effective cashback percentage.
The Formula: Reward Points to Rupee Value
Effective reward rate (%) = (Points earned per ₹100 × Value per point in ₹) ÷ 100 × 100
Example: SBI SimplyCLICK earns 10 points per ₹100 on regular spend. Each point is worth ₹0.25 when redeemed against your statement. So:
10 × ₹0.25 ÷ 100 = 0.25% effective cashback
That’s it. A 10-point earn rate sounds impressive. It’s 0.25%. Not so much.
Bank-by-Bank Reward Point Values (2026)
HDFC Bank
HDFC reward points are worth ₹0.25 each for statement credit or shopping redemptions. However, through SmartBuy (for flights and hotel bookings), points can be worth up to ₹0.50. Infinia and Diners Black holders get premium rates — up to ₹1 per point for specific redemptions.
Axis Bank
Axis EDGE Reward points are worth ₹0.20 each for cashback. EDGE Miles (earned on Magnus and Reserve) are a different currency — typically worth ₹1+ when transferred to airline partners like InterMiles or Air India Flying Returns.
SBI Card
1 SBI reward point = ₹0.25 for most redemptions. Important change from April 1, 2026: SBI Card is capping statement credit redemptions at 60,000 points per month. If you’re sitting on a large points balance, redeem before April or use non-statement-credit options.
ICICI Bank
1 ICICI reward point = ₹0.25–₹1 depending on card and redemption channel. Amazon Pay ICICI points work as direct cashback (₹1 per point) but the earn rate is lower.
Amex India (American Express)
Membership Rewards points are worth ₹0.50 for statement credit and up to ₹1+ when transferred to airline loyalty programs at 1:1 ratios (Jet Privilege/InterMiles during promotions). Amex’s transfer partners make it the strongest points currency in India for frequent flyers.
Comparison Table: Top Indian Credit Cards by Effective Reward Rate

| Amex Platinum Travel | 5 MR/₹50 | ₹0.50–₹1+ | ~5–10% on travel | Travel heavy spenders |
| HDFC Regalia Gold | 4 RP/₹150 | ₹0.25–₹0.50 | ~0.67–1.3% | General spend |
| SBI SimplyCLICK | 10 RP/₹100 (online) | ₹0.25 | ~2.5% online | Online shoppers |
| ICICI Amazon Pay | 2% cashback (Prime) | ₹1 (direct cashback) | ~2% | Amazon spenders |
| Axis Flipkart | 1.5% cashback | Direct cashback | 1.5% | Flipkart regulars |
Spend Categories That Kill Your Reward Rate
Banks exclude certain MCC (Merchant Category Codes) from reward accrual. Commonly excluded:
- Rent payments (via BBPS or apps like NoBroker, MagicBricks Pay) — most cards earn 0 points
- Fuel — earning capped or zero; fuel surcharge waiver is the actual benefit
- Utility bills — HDFC, Axis, SBI all cap or zero out utility bill rewards
- Wallet loads (Paytm, Amazon Pay) — excluded on virtually every card
- EMI transactions — converted EMI often earns reduced or no points
If a large chunk of your monthly spend falls here, your actual reward rate is lower than the headline number.
Redemption Options Ranked by Value
- Airline mile transfers — highest value, especially Amex → InterMiles, Axis Magnus → Flying Returns
- Hotel bookings (via bank portals like SmartBuy) — good value if you’d pay that rate anyway
- Flight bookings (via SmartBuy, Axis Travel Edge) — 30–50% better than statement credit on some cards
- Amazon/Flipkart vouchers — close to face value on select cards
- Statement credit — convenient but lowest value; SBI capping this from April 2026
- Merchandise in bank catalogs — worst value; avoid
Quick Calculator: What Are Your Points Worth?
Multiply your points balance by the redemption value for your card:
- HDFC RP × ₹0.25 = statement credit value
- HDFC RP × ₹0.50 = SmartBuy travel value (approximate)
- Axis EDGE Miles × ₹1.00 = airline transfer value (approximate)
- SBI RP × ₹0.25 = standard redemption
- Amex MR × ₹0.50 = statement credit value
- Amex MR × ₹1.00 = airline partner transfer value (approximate, partner-dependent)
For cards with direct cashback (Amazon Pay ICICI, Flipkart Axis), no calculation needed — 1 cashback point = ₹1.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find the rupee value of my reward points?
Check your bank’s reward catalog under “statement credit” or “cashback” redemption. Divide the points required by the rupee credit offered. E.g., if 1,000 points = ₹250 credit, each point is worth ₹0.25.
Are reward points better than cashback credit cards?
Cashback cards (like Amazon Pay ICICI or Flipkart Axis) are simpler and often better for everyday spenders. Points cards beat cashback only if you actively redeem for travel — and specifically for airline miles transfers. If you’re not doing that, cashback is usually more honest.
What is SBI Card’s new reward point rule from April 2026?
From April 1, 2026, SBI Card is capping statement credit redemptions at 60,000 points per month. If you need to redeem more than that, consider redeeming in the current month or switching to non-statement-credit redemption channels (vouchers, travel bookings) which may not have this cap.
Do reward points expire?
Yes, and terms vary. HDFC points expire in 2–3 years. Axis EDGE Miles expire in 3 years from the earn date. SBI reward points expire 2 years after earning. Amex MR points do not expire as long as your account is active. Always check your specific card’s T&Cs.
Can I combine reward points across cards from the same bank?
Generally no. HDFC Infinia points and HDFC Regalia points live in separate pools and cannot be merged. Axis allows some pooling under the EDGE Rewards platform. Most banks treat each card’s points as a separate balance.
Are reward points earned on EMI purchases?
Most banks do not award points on the EMI portion of a transaction once it’s converted. The spend may earn points at the point of purchase, but banks like HDFC reverse points on EMI conversions. Check your bank’s EMI rewards policy before counting on points from large EMI purchases.
